Give First, Then Grow

Firstfruits is not a leftover offering. It is a sequencing decision, and it quietly reorganizes the way you think about every dollar after it.

"Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing."

Proverbs 3:9-10

The order matters. Firstfruits comes before the harvest is fully counted, before you know how the year will close.

That is what makes it a different kind of decision than generosity.

Leftovers are easy. Firsts are formative.

Giving from what remains after everything else costs you almost nothing. It is a rounding decision. Giving first forces you to answer, in advance, who the money belongs to, and it removes the quiet assumption that security comes entirely from the balance.

"But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth."

Deuteronomy 8:18

The ability, not just the result. Your capacity to work, think, negotiate, and build came from somewhere.

How this shows up in business

Cash flow. Giving is budgeted like rent, not decided like a bonus. It gets a line item, and the line item is planned for at the beginning of the month.

Deals. Some opportunities are profitable and corrosive. Stewardship gives you permission to walk away from money that would compromise how you operate.

Reinvestment. Profit has a job before it has a distribution. In my own work the order is: give, reserve, reinvest, then pay.

Debt. Borrowing to consume is the opposite of stewardship: it takes from a future you have not yet stewarded.

The quiet compounding

No single act of firstfruits changes a financial picture. The pattern does. Repeated over years, it produces three things that no spreadsheet models:

  • Detachment. You can hold money loosely enough to make clear-eyed decisions with it.
  • Consistency. Small, faithful, boring behavior beats occasional large gestures.
  • Credibility. People notice when your money does not run you.

"Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow."

Proverbs 13:11

Little by little is the whole method. There is no shortcut that keeps the character intact.

Start with the next check

Not with a perfect percentage or a grand pledge. Decide, before the next payment arrives, what goes first. Write it down. Do it once. Then do it again next month.

The amount can grow later. The order is what changes everything.
